]]> TURGIS, S.D. — A semi truck and trailer veered off I-90 East near Exit 32 and crashed into a home. The truck’s 68-year-old female driver and a 63-year-old male passenger received only minor injuries.

According to a news release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, a 74-year-old male resident was inside the home at the time but did not have any injuries.

]]> An unusual looking trucking accident shut down two lanes in both the north and southbound of Highway 19 in Campbell River, B.C. for hours. The driver had no serious injuries. The semi owned by GFL Environmental and its trailer wound up on top of a concrete barrier that divided the north and southbound lanes.

Another commercial driver stated, “I talked to the driver and he was choking and trying to stay in his lane, and the truck obviously hit the ‘no-post’ and climbed up on there and ruptured a fuel tank.”

]]> On June 25, 2022, a crash took place in Mendon, Missouri involving an Amtrak train and a dump truck. On board the train were the sixteen members of Boy Scout Troops 73 and 12, ages 13 to 17 as well as 8 adults who offered help. The troops were returning from a nearly 100-mile backpacking trip in New Mexico according to Scott Armstrong, Boy Scouts of America Director of National Media Relations. Armstrong told People Magazine that after the accident happened, the Scouts took action using their first aid skills to help “extricate” people. He said they “held their own and did themselves proud” through the tragedy.

According to Missouri Highway Patrol, three people died as a result of the crash, including the driver of the dump truck. Boy Scout Patrol Leader, Eli, age 15, attempted first aid on the driver of the dump truck who was thrown from his truck into a ditch. He stayed by the driver’s side until he passed away.

A mother of one of the scouts, Nicole Tierney, said, “[I’m] very proud of how some of our boys helped with some of the injured passengers and how they were willing to put themselves aside. That’s just what Boy Scouts do.”

]]> Woodland Fire Department responded to an accident on Interstate 5 in Sacramento, California on June 28, 2022. Rescue workers arrived to find a Brinks armored truck dangling on side of Interstate 5.

According to California Highway Patrol, the driver was traveling too fast and rear-ended another vehicle. The Brinks truck then went through the guardrail only to be stopped by a concrete barrier.

While tow trucks held the armored truck in place, Woodland Firemen safely rescued the driver with their ladder truck.

]]> One of the most dangerous highways in the Arkansas / Louisiana / Texas area is Texas State Highway 315, which connects Carthage and Mount Enterprise. According to the Texas Department of Labor (TxDOT), 462 crashes with hundreds of injuries and 36 deaths have taken place on 315 since 2012.

Crash records from past accidents on Hwy 315 from TxDOT show that in every fatal crash involving 18-wheelers, driver fatigue, speed or traveling in the wrong lane factored into the cause of the accident. 18-wheelers have been involved in 25% of all accidents on Highway 315.

]]> Oceanside, CA — Oceanside Police Sgt. Tom Wayer reported that a woman was sleeping in the loading dock area of a local grocery store on South Oceanside Blvd near Commerce Street Saturday when a truck arrived for a delivery. The truck driver did not see the sleeping woman as he backed his truck toward the loading dock. He felt a bumped, left his truck to investigate and and found the injured woman. Paramedics transported her to the hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

]]> DENVER, CO – Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, was granted clemency from Gov. Jared Polis. Aguilera-Mederos was serving a 110-year prison sentence following a crash resulting in the deaths of four people in Denver, Colorado. Aguilera-Mederos’s sentence lead to public outrage and an online petition seeking clemency with around 5 million signatures, many of which were truckers. His sentence as reduced to 10 years, with parole eligibility on 12/30/2026.

 

Gov. Polis stated in a letter, “I believe you deserve clemency for several reasons. You were sentenced to 110 years in prison, effectively more than a life sentence, for a tragic but unintentional act. While you are not blameless, your sentence is disproportionate compared with many other inmates in our criminal justice system who committed intentional, premeditated, or violent crimes. Your highly unusual sentence highlights the lack of uniformity between sentences for similarly situated crimes, which is particularly true when individuals are charged with offenses that require mandatory minimum sentences. This case will hopefully spur an important conversation about sentencing laws, but any subsequent changes to the law would not retroactively impact your sentence, which is why I am granting you this limited commutation.”

The individuals who lost their life in this tragic accident are 24-year-old Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 67-year-old William Bailey, 61-year-old Doyle Harrison and 69-year-old Stanley Politano.
