The cycle of news lamenting truck driving employment turnover shouldn’t be the only information taken into consideration when weighing the consistency of the profession. Truck driver careers are among the top fields when considering those that are recession-proof, as reported by The Truckers Report.

While there is a driver shortage in 2022, this is due to an ever-growing need for truck drivers. The American Trucking Associations collected data that pointed to a consistent driver shortage, which currently sits at a need of nearly 80,000. In conjunction, however, is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report that the need for both heavy duty and tractor-trailer truck drivers will grow 4% in the coming decade. This calls for 90,000 new Commercial Driver Licenses to be distributed and then for each of those 90,000 to become employed with a trucking fleet.

While agencies report on a near-constant driver shortage, many fail to include that the need for drivers is consistently on the rise. The BLS, which attested to a 11,000-driver loss, failed to notate that the trucking industry needs over 250,000 CDL holders to be onboarded through their fleets.

“About 259,900 openings for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire,” the BLS stated. “Trucks transport most of the freight in the United States. The need for truck drivers should rise as households and businesses increase their spending and their demand for goods.”

Placed in contrast to the expected growth for the industry, such a mistake by the BLS could be overlooked. The U.S. is dependent on trucks to transport 72% of goods, and most communities fully rely on the industry.

And, it should be clear, that the BLS data is not being pulled into question. Sensational headlines just work against some of the realities of the trucking industry, leaving valuable information out of the catchy titles. The 2020 pandemic had a deep impression on the trucking industry with some retailers overstocking their inventories and not needing to meet those demands. This caused a decrease in the need for truck drivers since mass amounts of stock wasn’t being moved.

Following the pandemic, however, even more has shifted in the trucking industry, making it clear that truck drivers will not be in need of jobs anytime soon, despite any flashy headlines.

In an announcement from the American Trucking Association in October 2021, it was stated that the U.S. had a shortage of 80,000 drivers and that shortage could rise to 160,000 in the next 10 years. This shortage has led to long shifts and burnout for many veteran drivers like Hugo Rolin of St. Louis, Missouri. He stated to St. Louis on the Air, “You could theoretically drive a 21-hour shift if that’s what you wanted. If you had essential freight, medical equipment, or even food and groceries — shippers and brokers and everybody needed so much freight, so fast, all the time, that it burned me out. It was just too much for me to do.” Increased stress due to overwork and the dangers of trucking in these conditions, have led to many drivers like Rolin to leave trucking. Many companies have since made changes to attract drivers. Hugo has since gotten back behind the wheel for UPS.

Driver retention is also a huge problem with approximately 100 percent driver turnover rate.

Sexual harassment is a huge problem for women drivers, which could account for the fact that only 8 percent of truck drivers are women. Desiree Wood, the president of Real Women in Trucking said, “I urge people to know about the sexual assault in truck driver training, with women falling through the cracks. We hear all this hype about how the trucking industry wants more women. There’s a reason why as a percentage of them have not grown.”

Drivers are paid by the mile but work long 10-14 hour per day.

Chris Harvey, head of equity strategy at Wells Fargo, believes that the current trucker shortage has increased resulting from marijuana usage, whether it be failed drug testing or drivers leaving as a result of impending drug testing. Harvey stated at a recent conference, “It’s really about drug testing. We’ve legalized marijuana in some states but, obviously, not all … What we’ve done is we’re excluding a significant portion of that trucker industry.”

Marajuana use is becoming more of a norm in our society. With the overwhelming driver shortage, drivers are having more and more power to push for their rights. Currently, 18 states have cleared cannabis for recreational use as well as 37 for medical purposes. On the contrary, the trucking industry is more strict when it comes to their drug regulations. The FMCSA restricts drug positive drivers immediately and adds them to a federal database to prevent them from being hired by other companies.

Government data from December 2021 indicates 60,000 drivers tested positive for marijuana use in the past two years. These drivers could help with the 80,000 driver shortage.

The American truck driver deals with daily problems and setbacks. Some of these are covid related, low wages, long hours & time away from home and family. Now, they are dealing with the Canadian shut down causing more supply chain issues. Many long-drivers have left the field for other industries due these working conditions. Trucking, for obvious reasons, is a dangerous job. Turnover rate averages 96% for larger companies and 73% for smaller companies according to the American Trucking Associations.

Many drivers sign contracts to pay back necessary training costs with trucking companies through driving for that company. If they do not continue to drive for that company, the cost for the expensive training must be paid by the trucker to the company leading to high debt rates. The Biden administration announced an action plan to improve the US trucking workforce last year.

Shipping containers are used to safely and quickly transport goods. These containers are piling up at our docks due to the current trucker shortage. This creates a larger problem because these containers that are normally emptied and returned for more goods are sitting waiting to be delivered. This causes a problem for the next shipment because the containers aren’t being returned in their normal time frame.

This container shortage has now caused inflation in the prices of the containers. According to Porter of Lloyd’s List, a 20-foot container has increased from $1500 in 2019 to $3000 in 2020 to $4000 today. China holds the world’s largest shipping container manufacturing companies and is attempting to increase production to assist with the issue.
